December housekeeping for a smoother January 🧹

Hey Reader!

December is here, and I know the temptation is to coast toward the holidays. But hear me out: this is actually a great time to do a little housekeeping that will make January feel a lot less chaotic.

I'm not talking about massive projects. I'm talking about the small things that always get pushed to "someday". Documenting that one process that only lives in your head, updating your measurement plan to reflect recent changes, or finally setting up that automation you've been meaning to try. Future you will be grateful when you're not scrambling to remember why you made certain decisions six months ago.

If you're looking for inspiration, the articles I'm sharing this week all tie into this theme: communicating your priorities, understanding that you're not actually behind, and automating the tedious stuff so you can focus on work that matters.

What's on your December to-do list? I'd love to hear what you're tackling before the year wraps up.

Articles Worth Your Time

Automating Microsoft Clarity Reporting

Celeste Gonzalez published a helpful walkthrough on automating Microsoft Clarity reports using MCP and Cursor. If you've been curious about Model Context Protocols but weren't sure where to start, this is a practical entry point.

What I appreciate about this piece is that it doesn't assume you're a developer. The step-by-step approach covers everything from generating your API token to structuring prompts that pull the metrics you actually care about. This is exactly the kind of setup work that's perfect for a quieter December! Get it configured now, and you'll have automated reports ready to go in January.

Stop the SEO Imposter Syndrome (It's All Just SEO)

Kick Pointer Liz Linder wrote a thoughtful piece on overcoming SEO and AI imposter syndrome, and it's worth your time no matter what field you specialize in because the core message applies to anyone feeling overwhelmed by the pace of AI-related changes.

Liz makes a compelling case that the skills you already have are more valuable than ever. Remember: you're not falling behind, you're adapting. If you've been feeling anxious about keeping up with every new AI tool and framework, this piece is a great reality check.

Make Your Work Visible to Leadership

June Dershewitz published a piece on how to talk to leaders about what you're working on, and it tackles a challenge I see constantly in analytics. Our work doesn't always speak for itself. Good analytics just works so it never looks like work.

June introduces a "priority grid" that maps your initiatives to time allocation and business goals. The simple act of writing down everything you're working on, including the invisible "keep the lights on" work will help you see your own results more clearly and explain it better to others. This is perfect end-of-year prep. Spend an hour filling this out before January, and you'll have a much easier time during goal-setting conversations.

Hey Reader! Way back in 1996 I had to take one statistics class as a part of my geography degree. I never thought that I'd be using it again, 30 years later, but here we are! A client wanted to know if we can predict how many appointments they'll book based on their website traffic. The answer is yes, and yes it did involve stats, but it really wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I started with two columns of data: website sessions per week and booked appointments per week. I then...

Hey Reader! I've been thinking a lot about a situation that’s been coming up lately in conversations with clients and leads, and that’s diagnosis before investigation. Here's what I mean. At some point you'll have a situation where someone on your team (or a client, or a stakeholder) sees a number that looks wrong and immediately wants to fix it. Traffic's down? Let's redesign the homepage. Conversions dropped? Must be the new checkout flow. Engagement rate tanked? Time to rewrite all the...

Hey Reader! How do you listen for listenable events on a website you can't see, even with a VPN? That's the challenge I was working through last month, and I came up with a solution that might help some of you facing the same issue. First, I created a trigger in Google Tag Manager that listens for any event at all. It's a custom event trigger with an event name of .* (and make sure to turn on regex matching). Then, for your tag, it will look like this: This way you can see all the possible...
