Analytics Playbook changes + AI tracking insights you're missing

Ch-ch-changes!

Hey Reader!

We're making some changes around here that I wanted you to hear about directly from me before they start rolling out. The big one is that we’re changing our name from Kick Point Playbook to Analytics Playbook. The courses and resources from me aren’t changing, but this name change will better reflect my focus, the courses I'm creating, and the content you'll be seeing from me going forward.

This transition lets me focus on what I do best — helping you navigate the analytics landscape and get real business value from your data. Contributions from the Kick Point team will be moving over to the Kick Point website (which we're currently redesigning), and The Huddle — what you're reading right now — will still be The Huddle, but it'll be coming directly from me personally.

This means you'll get more of my direct insights on what's actually working in analytics right now, more honest takes on industry changes, and more practical guidance that you can implement immediately.

Have any questions about the transition? Just hit reply and I'm happy to answer.

Uncovering AI Insights in Your GA4 Data

Join me on Tuesday, August 19th as I break down how to track and analyze AI-powered visits that are already hitting your site but staying invisible in your standard GA4 reports. We'll cover traffic from tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, plus how to spot visits from AI Overviews, Featured Snippets, and People Also Ask.

I'll also walk you through my favorite AI prompts for analyzing GA4 data, because if you're not using AI to help make sense of your analytics, you're making your job harder than it needs to be!

Ready-Made GA4 Reports You Can Actually Use

The team at Search 'N Stuff published some really fantastic advice on avoiding burnout in SEO (including from KPer Liz Linder). Sure it’s SEO focused, but this applies just as much to those of us in analytics. Keeping up with all the changes in GA4, the constant platform updates, new features dropping monthly... it's exhausting.

What I appreciate about this piece is that it acknowledges the reality: you can't stay on top of everything. If you’re burned out, you make mistakes, miss important insights, and can't think strategically. Taking care of yourself isn't just personal — it's professional!

Finding Your Lost Repeat Visitors

DumbData put together a step-by-step tutorial on analyzing inactive users that goes beyond GA4's standard reports. Most GA4 reports focus on inactive users, but what about users who stopped coming back entirely?

This matters because repeat visitors are usually your most valuable audience segment. If you're losing more repeat visitors than you're gaining, that's a problem that needs attention. The tutorial shows you how to use explorations and segments to get the real story about visitor retention.

Ready-Made GA4 Reports You Can Actually Use

Kyle Rushton McGregor is launching something useful in September: a GA4 container with pre-built reports and explorations that you can copy directly to your own properties. You can sign up now.

Why this matters: we all know GA4's default reports leave a lot to be desired. Instead of everyone building the same useful reports from scratch, having a tested set you can import saves time and ensures you're not missing important insights. It's the kind of practical resource that lets you focus on analysis instead of setup.

Hey Reader! I want to talk about something I've been deliberately not writing about for a while and that’s server-side tracking. The honest reason I've held off is that for a lot of the people reading this, it hasn't been a practical option. The setup is technical, the cost is real, and most clients, when you describe what's involved, look at you like you've suggested they renovate the kitchen during a dinner party. There's no good way to time that conversation. But at the same time what’s...

Hey Reader! Here is a mantra that I want you to carry with you in your professional career: we are not data accountants. Somewhere along the way, marketers got sold the idea that good analytics means precise analytics. That if the numbers don't add up perfectly, something is broken. That your job is to account for every single session, every click, every conversion, and if you can't, you've failed. The problem with that whole idea is that the data was never complete. It just used to be less...

Hey Reader! I've been seriously irked lately. Client sites are getting hammered with spam and bot traffic, primarily from China and Singapore, and I've been running experiments to see what I can filter out in Google Tag Manager before it ever pollutes our client’s production GA4. Here's where I'm at so far: GeoIP — block based on country. Only worked a little, since the IPs that spammers use typically aren't in geoIP databases. Browser version — most spammers are using an older version of...
